Ankle pain
There are several common causes of ankle pain, including:
- Sprains: A sprain occurs when the ligaments that connect the bones in the ankle are stretched or torn. This can happen due to a sudden twisting or turning motion, or from a direct blow to the ankle.
- Strains: A strain occurs when the muscles or tendons in the ankle are stretched or torn. This can also happen due to sudden twisting or turning motions or from overuse.
- Arthritis: Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation and damage to the joints, and can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion in the ankle.
- Fractures: A fracture occurs when one or more of the bones in the ankle are broken. This can happen due to a sudden injury or from repetitive stress on the ankle.
- Tendinitis: Tendinitis is a condition that occurs when the tendons in the ankle become inflamed. This can happen from overuse or from a sudden injury.
- Gout: Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals build up in the joints, causing inflammation and pain.
- Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes pain and inflammation in the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects to the heel bone.
At Color Chiropractic, we take a holistic approach to ankle pain. Treatment usually begins by assessing which structures have been injured. Different muscles, supporting ligaments and even the skin can become damaged. Extremity adjustments, soft tissue correction and specific exercises can be used to help strengthen the muscles around the ankle, improve balance, and reduce the risk of future injuries. We also incorporate modalities like low level laser therapy, fascia release techniques and targeted nutritional supplementation to help our corrections hold. Oftentimes, we will also work with other structures like the knees, hips and spine. Ensuring proper balance to these structures will reestablish normal muscle coordination and strength to prevent re-injury. Lastly, making proper lifestyle changes such as proper footwear, nutrition, and posture can help reduce the risk of ankle pain and improve overall health.
It’s important to note that the specific treatment approaches used by a chiropractor will depend on the individual patient’s condition and needs. If you’re experiencing ankle pain or discomfort, it’s a good idea to speak with a chiropractor or another healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs.
