Neck Pain
Neck pain can be annoying and debilitating to a person’s well being. Oftentimes patient will describe having a dull and achy neck that is tight or persistent. It can affect them: while turning their neck to back out of the driveway, sitting at a computer or reading for a prolonged period of time. In the acute phase, a trauma to the neck can limit a person’s range of motion resulting in a neck that is stiff, sore and tight. However, if the neck is left untreated the stiffness can lead to chronic tightness, progression into a headache and even radiating pain up the head or down the arms.
There are several common conditions related to neck pain, including:
- Cervical Strain or Sprain: This is the most common cause of neck pain and often occurs as a result of a sudden movement or trauma to the neck, such as whiplash. It involves damage to the muscles and ligaments in the neck.
- Cervical Herniated Disc: This occurs when the outer portion of the intervertebral disc in the neck becomes damaged or ruptured, causing the inner portion to protrude and press on nearby nerves, leading to pain radiating down the neck, back or arms.
- Cervical Stenosis: This occurs when the spinal canal in the neck becomes narrow, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain and other symptoms.
At Color Chiropractic, we can help with neck pain by using a variety of techniques, including:
- Spinal adjustments: As Chiropractors, we use spinal adjustments to help realign the vertebrae in the neck, reduce pressure on the nerves, and relieve pain.
- Soft tissue therapy: We may use soft tissue therapy, such as muscle fascia release work or stretching to postural muscles that hold the head upright. Loosening tight muscles in the neck can also improve blood flow to the area.
- Exercise therapy: Ideally, good spinal alignment helps the spine carry the weight of the body. However, as holistic chiropractors, we may also prescribe exercises to help strengthen the muscles in the neck and improve mobility.
- Lifestyle changes: Oftentimes, lifestyle changes are what helps chiropractic adjustments to hold. We have a holistic approach and provide advice on lifestyle changes, such as proper posture and ergonomics, targeted nutrition to reduce inflammation and improve healing time. Stress management techniques may also be used to free up what the body may be holding onto emotionally.
It’s important to note that the specific treatment approach used will depend on the individual patient’s condition and needs. If you’re experiencing neck pain or discomfort, it’s a good idea to speak with a chiropractor or another healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs.
