The majority of people that come into a chiropractic office are often seeking solutions to pain.
Whether it is their back, neck or pain related to a headache, the chiropractic approach is always focused on providing natural and effective relief without resorting to dependency on invasive drugs or surgery. However, what happens when the pain is gone? Are there benefits to chiropractic care that can go beyond pain relief?
If you talk to people who have been to a chiropractor, you may find that some of them have decided to stick to their chiropractic care for a variety of reasons. Some of these reasons include:
- Being more at ease during stressful situations
- Better focus on task or test
- Injury prevention and increase performance
- A healthier immune system and much more.
Dr. Heidi Haavik is a chiropractor and a neuroscientist who has researched the area of human neurophysiology for the past 15 years.
She wrote a wonderful book called The Reality Check where she helps patients, doctors, and researchers examine the effects of chiropractic on various aspects of brain function. One of the interesting studies she conducted involved people with subclinical pain (i.e. People who have recurring dysfunction such as mild pain, ache, and/or stiffness, with or without a history of known trauma.) Although these people do not have severe enough symptoms to seek medical attention, Haavik and her team wanted to see if there were any benefits they could from chiropractic adjustments. Surprisingly, the study showed that a single session of chiropractic care altered:
- Sensory processing
- Sensorimotor integration
- How the brain controls muscles
- Weakened muscles by making them stronger and reducing muscle fatigue.
It’s wonderful to have verifiable measurements and research to back up what we’ve heard in our clinic for years. Dr. Havvik’s research helps us understand the depth of the chiropractic adjustment and the untapped potential of the human body.
